Jimmy Wayne: Meet Me Halfway
On January 1, 2010, Jimmy Wayne began his "Meet Me Halfway" journey on foot from Nashville to Phoenix in an effort to to raise awareness of homeless teens and young adults who age out of the foster care system. However, he is by no means on his own as he makes his way to his destination. As Jimmy hit the pavement, thousands joined him via the social networks following him every step of the way; all the while becoming more informed as he raises an awareness about his cause like no one has before.
Anyone who has driven to the west coast from anywhere east of the Mississippi River, is well aware of the "long stretches of lonsome" you encounter. It's a long tiresome trip even from the comorts of a luxury vehicle. It's almost impossible to visualize walking. Yet that's exactly what Jimmy Wayne set out to do, everyday reaching thousands broadcasting via his Android mobile phone and posting photos and tweets on Twitter.
Not only did he leave Nashville in the dead of winter, he was fully aware of how some would say he was doing it to promote his music career. The tough love life has shown Jimmy Wayne, has undoubtedly toughened him enough to handle both the physical and emotional aspects of his mission. The fact that he is a celebrity is what gave him the edge to rally support. His strength and fortitude along with sheer determination
continues to draw attention to his message.
Of all the problems this nation is facing, homeless teens aging out of the foster care system seems to be one of the most obscure...At least until now thanks to Jimmy Wayne. Although many are working tirelessly to find a solution, it's highly doubtful that the country as a whole would even know about the problem had he not embarked on this awareness campaign which may have began with a fanbase following, but heads-up from other
sectors began to mount until an entire country became involved. What that means at the end of the walk is still to be determined. But for now the "Meet Me Halfway" project has most everyone's undivided attention.
The journey has produced some humorous moments and some serious ones. Then there are some that just makes you roll your eyes like when Jimmy was harrassed by the police on a highway in Okalahoma which was broadcast in real time with his phone. Of course these are only moments and in no way gives the full picture of the brutal reality of taking on such a lonely mission. Common sense would dictate that
it's painful and dangerous.
The driving force behind Jimmy Wayne's determination to make a difference is his genuine feelings and heartfelt compassion for those with whom he has so much in common. "For who! At risk and homeless teens! Why? I've been there; slept on the ground; went w/o food for days; ate garbage; witnessed the violence!" is a recent excerpt from his twitter postings. It's a sobering statement that accurately describes the plight of those he wants so desperately to help.
At this time he is in New Mexico. The days ahead of him are long roads with few people if any. Even the cowboys didn't like traveling in those parts. The only thing different now is the roads are paved. But there is no doubt he will make it to his destination and there is no doubt that at the end he will hear a resounding "Well Done." - NU
